Seven Decades on the Green: Chessington Bowling Club Celebrates 70 Years
CHESSINGTON, UK — There is a distinct, rhythmic click of wood meeting wood that has echoed across Churchfields Recreation Ground for generations. This year, that sound carries a bit more weight as Chessington Bowling Club officially celebrates its 70th Anniversary, marking seven decades of community, competition, and camaraderie.
Founded in the mid-20th century, the club has grown from a modest local gathering into a cornerstone of Chessington’s social fabric. Nestled off Church Lane, the club’s pristine green has survived the changing landscape of the Royal Borough of Kingston, remaining a tranquil "hidden gem" for residents.

A Legacy of Community
While the sport of bowls is the primary draw, members will tell you the club is about much more than a well-placed shot. Over the last 70 years, it has served as a vital social hub, hosting quiz nights, bingo, and the popular "Darts Nights" that keep the clubhouse buzzing even during the off-season.
"It’s more than just a club; it’s a second home," says one long-standing member. This sentiment is echoed by the families who have seen three generations take to the green under the Chessington banner.
Looking to the Future
As part of the Platinum celebrations, the club is opening its doors to the next generation of players. With the Celebrate Chessington community event taking place nearby this May at Churchfields, the club is eager to show that bowls is a sport for all ages—combining tactical skill with physical health and mental well-being.
Whether you are a seasoned "skip" or have never held a bowl in your life, the 70th anniversary serves as a perfect invitation to step onto the grass. Here’s to another 70 years of keeping the spirit of Chessington rolling.
